Jessica Gonda participated in Alternative Spring Break 2016 #UAASB2016

2016 Mar 30

Jessica Gonda of Boardman, OH was one of more than 90 University of Akron students to complete a variety of service projects during the tenth annual Alternative Spring Break, March 21-25. Groups worked with one of three diverse non-profit organizations in Georgia, North Carolina, and Florida. In all, these volunteers dedicated 3,056 hours to making a difference.

Gonda spent the week at Camp Twin Lakes in Winder, Ga. For the past 21 years, Camp Twin Lakes has provided life-changing camp experiences to thousands of Georgia's children with serious illnesses, disabilities, and other life challenges with week-long summer camps, and through hospital-based Camp-To-Go programs. Volunteers at this location tackled a new service project each day. The group painted a craft cabin, dug a trench for Wi-Fi installation, created mini library shelves, built mobile chicken coops, dug holes and assembled posts for a fenced-in equestrian pasture, and painted raised vegetable beds. Collectively, the group saved the camp $20,301, which will allow for 25 campers to attend for free this summer!

Unique about this trip, all the volunteers are members of UA's fraternity and sorority life community, including Alpha Phi.
